Competency #8-Internet
Using Google, I found the web-site for the Multnomah County Library www.multcolib.org/books/lists/adultlists.html. Their web-site has a readers page which allows the user to view booklists, staff picks, and award lists for children, teen, and adults. As a librarian, I can utilize this page when helping my customers find new authors and titles.

Competency #6-Specific Facet; Diaglog
For the fourth and final part of the 6th competency, I am choosing to utilize the specific facet search strategy while searching the Library Literature and Information Science database available through Dialog.
I was not able to locate any information on providing reader's advisory services in public libraries using Dialog. Since part of providing readers advisory is being familiar with popular materials, I chose to search for information on banned books week. The following screen shots my search and results.

The final screen shot is of the 5th hit which is a thesis about promoting fiction collections by using different library web-sites. This is another tool that successful readers' advisors can use to promote this service.

Podcast-Competency #3
Using the Yahoo Podcasts search engine, I found "The Four Doorways" podcast (http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/info/publib/news/nancy_pearl). In it, Nancy Pearl describes the 4 ways readers can enter a book. She states that people choose the type of books they do based on at least one of the following elements present in the plot line:
- Story
- Character
- Setting
- Language
I chose this podcast because it will be very helpful in my current job position. As the training coordinator for my department, I am responsible for the reader's advisory training presented to our employees.

Welcome!
This blog was created to satisfy the course requirements of ISAR 5013 (Information Storage & Retrieval). I will post competencies here throughout the Spring 2008 semester as part of my grade for this class.
I am working towards my master's degree in Library Science. Since I am interested in the public library setting, I will focus on the topic of providing reader's advisory services to library patrons.
